Head to Aisho, Shiga for the 11th annual Asahi Sugidama Festival at the historic Fujii Honke brewery, founded in 1831. This lively winter event celebrates the new sake vintage with the unveiling of freshly pressed 'ichiban shibori' namazake. Enjoy tastings of 10+ sake varieties at the 'chokotto-nomi' corner (with a commemorative cup to take home), a guided brewery tour by the brewery head, standing-bar tastings in the cultural-property East storehouse, and a bustling marche with local Shiga foods, kasujiru, and sake-lees scooping. There's free entry, live music, and plenty for non-drinkers. Free shuttle buses run from JR Inae Station, making it a convenient seasonal excursion from Kyoto.
